Lang-8.com

Beginning this semester, I would like everyone in this class to keep a diary on Lang-8.com. 今学期から、Lang-8.comで日記を書いてもらいます。  I think that you will find that this will help you improve language skills as you make friends. 言葉を学びながら、友達が作りやすくなると思います。Here are the steps you should follow today.今日は、次の手順で作業をしてください。

1. Click here to open Lang-8.com in another window.　ここをクリックして、Lang-8.comを別のウィンドーで開いてください。
   I would like to to have two browser windows open: this one and another on on which you will register for Lang-8. ２つのブラウザーのウィンドーを同時に開いてほしいと思います。If you have trouble doing this, ask someone in your group for help. If you still have trouble, ask me for help.うまくいかなければグループの友達に聞いてください。それでもわからなければ私に聞いてください。
   
2. Choose your "interface" language and then click on the big orange button. 「表示言語」を選び、オレンジのボタンをクリックしてください。
   
   
   
   
   
3. Type in your e-mail address.メールアドレスを入力してください。
   You should type an computer-based e-mail address, not a mobile phone address. パソコンのアドレスにしてください。携帯てはうまくいきません。
   
   
   
   
   You will need to open your e-mail account and click on the link in the message from Lang-8.メールで届いてリンクをクリック（またはコピーとペースト）をすることになります。
   
   
   
   
4. Choose your nickname, etc.ニックネームを選ぶ。
   The nickname can be whatever you like. ニックネームは自由です。You do no need to use your real name.本名を使う必要はありません。

5. Write a new entry　日記を書く。
   If you are learning Japanese, write about yourself in Japanese. Please also write about what you think you might enjoy talking about with other students in this class. If you cannot write everything in Japanese, you can mix Japanese and English. If you have trouble typing in Japanese you can use romaji. 日本語が母語でない人は日本語で書くのが原則です。日本人の学生は英語て書いてください。簡単な自己紹介とどういうことについて話していきたいかにつて書いてください。

Sightseeing in Hitoyoshi

Despite the rain, I enjoyed sightseeing in Hitoyoshi on Sunday. 雨であったにもかかわらず、日曜日の人吉市での観光は楽しかった。This photo was taken after we toured Sengetsu Shuzo, a Shochu factory. この写真は繊月酒造（焼酎を作る工場）を見学した後に撮られたものです。Everyone has their feet in an ashiyu, that is, an onsen for your feet. 私とは足湯を楽しんでいるところです。

After that we visited the nearby Bukeyashiki or Samura Home. その後は武家屋敷を訪ねました。The picture you see was taken by someone else on another day.　写真は他人が違う日に撮ったものです。I was fascinated to learn about all of the unique characteristics of a samurai home. 侍の家の特徴についていろいろと学ぶことができ、たいへん面白かった。

SL Hitoyoshi

Here are some views of the train on which the students returned after our seminar trip. We followed basically the same course in our car and so were able to catch some video of the train after we passed it. ゼミ旅行の最後のイベントはSL人吉乗車でした。車でほぼ同じ道を走ったので、二回ほど車を止めて録画できました。

Last minute instructions

Hi!

I'm looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow before 9:00 AM. 明日の朝、9:00ちょっと前までに、皆さんに会うのを楽しみにしています。Again, please be on time. くれぐれも時間を守るように、よろしくお願いします。

I have some last minute instructions for all of you. ぎりぎりになりましたが、旅行について伝えなければならないことがあります。

1. Onsen 温泉
   
   You will need to have your own towel and soap. タオルと石けんを持ってきてください。There is a very good, natural onsen that we can use nearby. 近くにいい天然温泉があります。 It only costs 100 yen. 100円だけです。　But they do no provide towels or soap. しかし、タオルも石けんも置いてありません。
   
   There are also several onsen in downtown Hitoyoshi. 人吉市内にも温泉があります。So, those who want to may be able to take a bath on Saturday and then again on Sunday. だから、温泉が好きな人は土曜日も日曜日も温泉に入ることができるでしょう。
   
   Also, it will be a good idea to bring a plastic bag in which you can store your wet towel. ぬれたタオルを入れるためのビニール袋も持ってくるといいでしょう。
   　
2. Rain 雨
   
   The forecast for tomorrow is rain. 明日の天気予報は雨。Fortunately, the probability of rain is lower for Hitoyoshi than Kumamoto City. 幸い、降水確率は人吉の方が熊本市より低くなっています。Still, bring an umbrella. でも傘は持って来てね。
   　
3. Rafting ラフティング
   
   Saturday's rain will make Sunday's rafting better. 土曜の雨で日曜のラフティングは良くなるはずです。
   
   If you have a swimming suit, bring it. 水着があれば、持って来てください。Or, wear something that can get really wet. とにかく、びしょぬれになるから、濡れても良いものを準備して。You must wear a pair of shoes or athletic sandals. Of course, they will get wet. You cannot go barefoot. 靴やしっかりしたサンダルが必要。もちろん、濡れてもいいもの。裸足は不可。
   
   Taxis will come to pick you all up at 8:20 on Sunday morning. 日曜の朝の8:20にタクシーが向かいに来ます。With four people to each taxi, taxis are the cheapest and easiest, most reliable way to get to the rafting site. タクシー一台に4人になるので、タクシーが一番安くて、簡単、しかも確実な移動方法です。
   　
4. One more expense もうひとつの出費
   
   We need to pay Mr. Nakashima, our guide. ガイドになってくれる中島さんへの謝礼が必要となります。I'm not quite sure how much that will be. まだ金額がはっきりとわかりません。　Probably between 500 and 1000 yen per person. おそらく500円と1000円の間になるでしょう。I apologize for not being able to get all of the expenses to you in writing in advance. 全出費を事前に文章に示すことができなく、すみません。I'm doing my best to limit expenses. できるだけ安く旅行ができるように頑張っています。
   　
   
5. Volleyball バレーボール
   
   I borrowed two soft volleyballs that we can use. ミニバレー用のやわらかいボールを二個借りました。

SL Hitoyoshi

We are considering returning to Kumamoto on July 4 on the SL (Steam Locomotive) Hitoyoshi. 7月4日には、SL人吉で熊本に戻ることを検討しています。

It costs 1,770 + 800 yen (a total of 2,570 yen) per person to ride. 料金は合計2,570円です。

It leaves Hitoyoshi Station at 2:39 and arrives in Kumamoto at 5:21. 人吉発が14:39で熊本着が17:21です。
