 クルーザー物語 The Cruiser Story 

突然の暴風雨にみまわれた大型ヨットが２艇、無人島に避難しました。Two large yachts got caught in a storm and landed on a deserted island. １艇には若い女性とフィアンセ、もう１艇にはヨットマンと老人が乗っていました。A young woman and her fiance were on one yacht and a yachtsman and an old man were on the other yacht. 日が暮れて暴風雨がおさまったころ、フィアンセが高熱にうなされ、意識不明におちいってしまいました。 In the evening, about when the storm ended, the young woman's fiance got a high fever and then lost consciousness. 若い女性は、汗を拭いたり水を口に含ませたりするなど、いろいろと手を尽くしてみましたが、容態は全くよくなりません。The young woman tried to bring the fever down by wiping the sweat from her fiance with moist towel and putting small amounts of water in his mouth but his condition did not improve. 夜はどんどん深まっていきます。She continued to care for him late into the night.

ヨットの操縦ができない彼女は、何とか彼を助けたい一心で、ヨットマンに医師のいる島まですぐに連れていってくれるように頼みました。Finally, desperate to save him and unable to operate a yacht by herself, she asked the yachtsman to take her fiance to an island where a doctor could help him. するとヨットマンは、「この島から医者のいる島まではどうみても５時間はかかる。それに夜の航海は危険で、命がけになる。」としばらく考えていましたが、「あなたを、今、抱かせてくれたらヨットを出しましょう。」と言いました。The yachtsman thought "It will take a least five hours to get that island. Sailing at night is dangerous. I'd be risking my life to try to take him." Then, he said "I'll do it if you'll have sex with me first." 思いもよらない言葉に困り果てた彼女は、老人に「どうしたらいいでしょう。」と相談したところ、老人は、「今のあなたにとって何がよいのか、何が悪いのかは私には言うことができません。自分の心に問いかけて自分で決めるのがいいでしょう。」と言うのみでした。 Shocked by what the yachtsman had said, the young woman went to the old man for advice. He said, "I can't tell you what is good for you or what is bad for you now. You must look inside yourself and come to your own decision." 彼女は悩み苦しんだ末に、ヨットマンの言うとおりにしました。After agonizing about the decision, she decided to do as the yachtsman asked. 

夜明けにヨットマンの操縦するヨットは、無事、医者のいる島に着き、フィアンセは医者の手当てを受けることができました。At dawn, the yachtsman's yacht arrived at the island and the young woman's fiance was treated by the doctor. ３日３晩、医者の懸命な看護により、フィアンセは目を覚ましました。After three days, thanks to the dedicated care of the doctor, the fiance woke up. 若い女性はフィアンセを抱きしめながら、事の成り行きを話そうかどうか大いに迷いましたが、正直にすべてを打ち明けました。The young woman embraced her fiance then wondered whether or not she should tell him what happened, she explained how she got the yachtsman to cooperate. それを聞いたフィアンセは怒り狂い、彼女に「何ていうことをするんだ！！絶交だ！！！」と言い、彼女を部屋から追い出しました。Upon hearing this, the fiance got very angry and chased her out of the room, saying "How could you do such a thing? Our relationship is over!"

 あまりのことに呆然とし、彼女が浜辺に座って波の行方をみつめていると、医者がやってきて、「どうしたの？」と聞きました。In shock, the young woman sat by the beach and stared out over the waves. The doctor came over and asked her "What's wrong?" 彼女が事情を話すと、「僕には君の気持ちが痛いほどわかるよ。彼には君のことをよく話してみよう。きっと彼も病気が治れば理解してくれると思う。それまでしばらくの間、ぼくがあなたの世話をしてあげよう。」と言いながら、彼女の肩に手をかけました。After the young woman explained what happened, the doctor said "I really feel your pain. Let me explain things to him. I'm sure he'll understand after his recovered completely. In the meantime, I'll take care of you" and put his hand on her shoulder.

 手順　Steps

1. Write down the rank (order) you think is best. 個人で自分が一番いいと思うランク（順番）を書くこと。
2. In your group, decide on a rank (order) that best represents the opinions of all of the members of your group.　少人数のグループで、全メンバーの意見を最もよく表す順番を決めること。As you do so, discuss your reasons for giving a particular person a high or a low ranking. それぞれの人物のランクを上げる、あるいは下げる理由についてよく話しながら決めること。
3. In our classroom, write the number of your group and the rank (order) that your group decided upon on the blackboard.　黒板にグループで決めたランク（順番）を黒板に書いてください。

1. Do you sometimes hesitate to speak with people you are meeting for the first time.  初対面の人と話すのをためらうことはありますか？

This is hard to say . . . 言いにくいですが・・・

In today's class, I'd like to use role playing to think about how we tell people (or don't tell them) things that they might not want to hear.  今日の授業で、ロール・プレーという手法を使って、言いにくいことをどう伝える（あるいは伝えない）かについて考えたいと思います。

Here's one concrete example.  一つの具体例を挙げましょう。Let's say that you are invited to a movie but you're not interested in going to see that movie.  映画に行こうと誘われているけども、その映画に興味がないので、気があまり進まない、としましょう。What would you say? なんと言いますか？Let's start by having a few pairs of people demonstrate this and then talking about what we have seen.  最初に数組にこういう場面のローネプレーをしてもらってから、話し合いましょう。

Continuing discussions online

Let's continue class discussions online. ネット上で授業でのディスカッションを続けましょう。For example, last week we talked about gay marriage so it would have been nice if some of the people who didn't have an opportunity to speak up in class, or people who had more to say, had posted a thought or two about the topic in our Facebook group. 例えば、先週は同性愛者同士の結婚について話し合いましたので、授業の後に、授業中に話す機会がなかった人、あるいは言い足りなかった人がFacebookのグループでもう感想を書いてくれればよかったと思います。If a few students do this, I hope others will comment on those comments. 何人かがこうしてくれれば、他のメンバーにそのコメントについてコメントをしてもらえればいいと思います。

Assignment / 課題について

In this post, I would like to explain in writing the assignment that I described in class. この投稿では、授業で説明した課題を改めて説明したいと思います。In a nutshell, I asked the people who went with us to Minamata to write about our visit to Hot House and the people who couldn't go to find a book about Minamata disease in the library, read part of it, and write about that. 簡単にまとめると、水俣へのゼミ旅行に参加できた人にはほっとはうすの感想を書くこと、水俣へのゼミ旅行に参加できなかった人には図書館で水俣病関連の本を見つけてもらい、その一部を読んで、感想を書くこと、というのが課題となっています。Here are some more details. 下にもう少し詳しくまとめてみます。
