Amae summary

We've spent the last two sessions talking about amae. In this post, I'd like to try to summarize a few points about amae.
  • The author of The Anatomy of Dependence, Doi Takeo thinks that amae is a key concept in Japanese culture.  『「
  • Amae involves the dependence of a child on a parent or the dependence of one person on another person in a relationship that approximates a parent-child relationship.
  •  In Japanese culture, the dependence characterized by amae is sometimes regarded as bad but sometimes regarded as good. While it is true that children may be scolded for being too dependent (甘えすぎること), the expression "amae jozu" (skillfully showing amae toward another person) is one indication that amae can also be regarded positively.
  • Doi says, and I think our discussion also indicates, that amae tends to be viewed somewhat more positively in Japan than in English-speaking countries.
  • I think that the Japanese fascination with cuteness (kawaii culture) is related to amae in that it involves a positive evaluation of the display of childlike qualities.
  • The notion of amae can help us understand why hierarchical sempai-kohai relationships can be beneficial for the kohai as well as the sempai.
  • The child-rearing practices we discussed under the heading of "skinship" in class, involve an affirmation of amae between parent and child.
  • Child-rearing in the West has tended to emphasize independence, but "attachment parenting" is an example of a tendency to view what the Japanese call amae more positively.

Here are some pdf files of the introduction to a famous book about amae in Japanese culture.
This book can help one think about how cultures differ in their views of childlike dependence.

A way to study Japanese online

To foreign students (留学生の皆さんへ),

If you would like to improve your Japanese while reading the news, I recommend using the http://news.tbs.co.jp website. The text shown on most stories is usually the same as the narration on the correspondent videos. You might also try using http://www.rikai.com/perl/Home.pl to assist you with difficult words in the text.

Expenses

Though I am late, I have finally finished calculating our trip expenses.

All exchange students will benefit from the subsidy provided by the Faculty of Economics but I am asking the Japanese guests who are not formal members of our seminar to pay the actual cost.  In the Japanese that follows, I explain the subsidy and how I think we should divide it.

Must women be cute?

In response to last week's survey, more women than men agreed with the following statement: I feel burdened by having to spend time and money on clothes, hair styles, and/or make up.

Earlier this year, Fukuoka City included the following statement on the web page about "Kawaii-ku": "'The women of Fukuoka are kawaii [cute].' This is a comment one often hears from visitors to Fukuoka." Some women complained that this statement implied that women must be cute and thus put pressure on them to try to but "cute." What do you all think about this? Are women under more pressure than men to look good? If so, is this fair? I have written about this subject (with images) on Facebook. ("Backlash against 'cuteness'" and "Pressure to be 'kawaii'"

Tattoo "survey" in Osaka

In 2011, an Osaka City employee who was working as a cook at a children's welfare facility was accused of intentionally frightening children by showing them his tattoos. There are differing reports about whether or not the employee actually committed the acts of which he was accused.

The accusations against the employee lead to the implementation of a survey of all 38,000 Osaka City employees. The survey was implemented between May 1st and May 10th, 2012. In the survey, employees were asked to show the location and size of any tattoos they had on parts of their body outside the shaded areas on the form.

Employees were informed that the all employees were required to respond to the survey and that the results would be considered when making job assignments.

In August of 2012, Osaka City announced that they had issued formal reprimands to six employees who had refused to respond to the survey.

One of the reprimanded employees has sued the city government, claiming that the survey violates his privacy.

In May of 2012, a group of Osaka lawyers issued an appeal to the city to cancel its survey. Here are some of the reasons they sited for their opposition to the survey.
  • The decision about whether or not to have a tattoo is a matter of personal expression and the decision about whether or not to disclose a tattoo is a matter of privacy.「人が身体に入れ墨やタトゥーを施すことは、個人の表現の自由であり、幸福追求権、人格権の一発露であり、プライバシーである。」
  • Japan's laws governing local officials do not prohibit the wearing of tattoos. 「
  • If the visibility of tattoos is the issue of concern there is no need to conduct a survey about tattoos that are not normally visible.

Discussing discussion

I thought the last we had last time about the Japanese constitution was good.
  • You seemed interested in thinking together, not necessarily "winning."
  • I could tell you were actually "hearing" each other.
At the same . . . 同時に
  • I think think that some of you were holding back.
  • I wish the more of your would have commented on what your classmates wrote on Facebook. Facebook
Today, I'd like to discuss "discussion."
