Plans for trip to Nagasaki

I have made reservations for us to stay at the Nagasaki Youth Hostel on Saturday, November 27th. 27日の長崎へのゼミ旅行の宿泊の予約をしました。長崎カトリックセンターユースホステル」(長崎県長崎市上野町10-34, 電話 095-846-4246)に泊まることになりました。The location is ideal and the price is very reasonable at 2700 yen per person. 理想的な立地条件で、一人2700円はかなり安いと思います。

I have also reserved a bus that will come to meet us in Shimabara after our ferry ride. また、島原でフェリーから降りたらすぐにチャーターバスに乗れるよう手配をしました。If there are 22 students, the charter bus will cost about 3000 per person. 学生参加者が22名なら費用は一人3000円程度になります。 If there are more students, the cost will be lower. 参加者がより多くなれば、更に安くなります。A great advantage of a charter bus is that we can go virtually anywhere we like on our way to Nagasaki. チャーターなので、私たちが寄りたいところに寄れるというメリットが大きいと思います。

Here are the expenses that I know about at this time. 現時点で把握できている出費は次のようになっています。

Here's a map of where we are planning to go. 行き先の地図です。

Is sex taboo in Japan?

The idea that sex may be taboo in Japan was brought up in our last class. 先週の授業で、日本ではセックスがタプー視されているだろう、という意見がありました。I am from the United States. 私はアメリカ出身です。I think that in many ways sex is less taboo here than in the U.S. アメリカと比べた場合に、日本ではセックスがあまりタブー視されていないように思います。Consider the following examples. 次の例について考えてみるといいかも知れません。
  • When I first came to Japan some thirty years ago, I was surprised to see late-night programs on the public airwaves that featured nudity. 最初に日本に来たころ(30年ほど前に)、深夜の民間テレビ番組で女性の裸を見せられることがあって、驚きました。Apparently, such programs are no longer tolerated, but historically at least, Japanese television seems less puritanical than American television. 近年はこういう番組がないようですが、歴史的に見て、アメリカのテレビに見られるような清教主義は日本にはあまりなかっただろうと思います。
  • I think that Japanese people have a more relaxed attitude toward extramarital affairs than do Americans. 日本人は不倫(特に、結婚している男性の不倫)に対して、アメリカ人ほど厳しくないと思います。For example, a lot of Japanese people had trouble understanding why the affair between then President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky was such a big deal in the U.S. 例えば、Clintonが大統領だったころに、Monical Lewinskyとの不倫に関するスキャンダルがありましたが、多くの日本人にとっては「なんでアメリカ人はこの件でここまで大騒ぎするのか」と思っていたようです。
  • Several decades ago, I remember being surprised to hear Japanese men speak rather matter-of-factly on television about visiting massage parlors. 数十年前のことですが、日本のテレビで男性がかなり平然と「ソープランド」などに通うことについて話しているのを聞いて驚いた記憶があります。
  • The convenience story near my house displays soft-core pornography quite prominently on low shelves that are just the right height for elementary school kids to see. 私の家の近くのコンビニは、エロ本やマンガなどを小学生にとって見やすい高さの棚に置いています。Any customer is free to pick up a copy and have a look. どなたでも自由に手にとって見ることができます。There is no need to be concerned about the kind of embarrassment shown in the video on this page. このサイトにある動画で見られるような恥ずかしい思いをする必要はありません。

"事なかれ主義"

Kotonakareshugi is a Japanese term that is a little bit difficult to translate into English but I think it has to do with trying to avoid the negative instead of trying to achieve the positive. 「事なかれ主義」というのは英訳しにくいのですが、いいことを成し遂げようとするよりも悪いことを避けようとする習慣や価値観を指していると思います。For example, I think that if a baseball player is more interested in avoiding errors and thereby not embarrassing himself than in hitting a home run, that would be an example of kotonakaresugi. 例えば、野球選手がホームランを打ったり、点数が入るようなプレーをしようとするよりも、エラーなどを避けようとすれば「事なかれ主義」と言えるのではないかと思います。

Here's a brief explanation of the etymology of kotonakareshugi. 次に「事なかれ主義」の語源を英語で説明します。Kotonakareshugi is made up of three parts. Koto is "thing," or in this case, a "bad thing." Nakare is the imperative form of nai (does not exist) so kotonakare means "don't allow problems to occur." Shugi is like the "-ism" suffix in English. So, kotonakareshugi might be translated "no-problem-ism" or "avoid-problems-ism."

I introduce this word here because I think it is related to the issue of "embarrassment avoidance" that we discussed last week. ここで「事なかれ主義」を紹介したのは、先週話した「はずかしいことを避ける」ことと関係があると思ったからです。

Write in your diaries

I expect everyone in this class to write regularly in their Lang-8 diary.  この授業を受けている皆さんにはまめにLang-8の日記を更新していってほしいと思います。I also expect you to correct and write comments on the diaries of other members of the class, especially members writing in a language you know well.  授業の他のメンバーの日記、特に留学生の日記に対するコメントを書いたり、添削したりすることもしてほしいと思います。You can find links to recent entries in the diaries of the other members of this class on the right side of this blog.  この授業を受けている他のメンバーの最近の日記へのリンクはこのブログの右側にあります。If you do not see a link to your blog (even though you have written in your diary) please send me an e-mail (masden@kumagaku.ac.jp) about the problem.  日記に書いているにもかかわらず、自分の日記がこのブログの右側に表示されていない場合はメール(masden@kumagaku.ac.jp)をください。

Lang-8 makes it very easy for anyone to see whether or not you are helping other people by correcting and commenting on their diaries.  Lang-8では他人の日記に対するコメントを書いたり、添削をしたりしているかどうかは一目瞭然です。

I'm looking forward to seeing the numbers of both "Entries Written" and "Corrections Made" increase on your blogs.  皆さんのEntires Writtenの数字も、Corrections Madeの数字もの増えていくことを期待しています。
