Springwater tour

Today in class, we decided that some of you will have an outing together on Wednesday, the 30th of May.  今日の授業で、ゼミ参加者の中で都合がつく人は5月30日（水）に一緒にでかけることが決まりました。The destination and what you do is completely up to you.  行き先、そして何をするかは皆さんに決めてもらいたいと思います。One suggestion I can make, however, is a cycling tour of springwater spots.  私が提案するなら、自転車でできる「わき水ツアー」がいいのではないかと思います。Here's a map of the route I think would be good on a hot day.  暑い日なら、次のルートがいいのではないかと思います。

The one-way distance is about 10 kilometers.  片道10キロほどのコースです。Over much of the course, you follow along Ezuko.  コースの大部分は江津湖に沿って進みます。The final destination is the Kashima Natural Springwater Pool.  最終的な目的地は嘉島湧水天然プールです。It's entirely spring fed and the water is very, very, very cold.  100%湧き水のプールの水は、ものすごく冷たいです。You may find it to be too cold, but, on a hot day you won't feel hot after you jump in.  冷た過ぎると思うかもしれませんが、暑い日に飛び込んでしまえば、もう熱く感じることはありません。

Cycling day?

Shall we choose a day to go cycling together? 皆で一緒にサイクリングをする日を決めませんか？

I recommend the Yuka Family Road.  ゆうかファミリーロードがいいと思います。

If the Yuka Family Road is a little too ambitious, I recommend Ezuko.  もしゆうかファミリーロードがたいへんすぎるなら、江津湖をお勧めします。

Information about our trip

Here's some basic information about our trip.  旅行に関する基本的な情報をここに載せます。

1. Schedule スケジュール
   We leave at 9 AM (May 19th) from the rotary, near the main entrance to the university.　午前9時（19日）、ロータリー付近から出発します。We want to LEAVE at 9 AM so please come a little early. 9時に出発したいので、少し早目に来てください。 Here's the schedule I have submitted to the university. 大学に提出した予定は次のとおりです。
   
   
   
2. What to bring 持ってくる物
   Towel for onsen, games to play Saturday night, sunscreen for Sunday, things to play with at the beach 温泉用のタオル、土曜の夜のためのゲームやトランプ、日曜日に使える日焼け止め、海辺での遊びに使えるもの

   Two students told me that they need to save money so they will skip Hot House.  二人の学生は節約する必要があるので、ほっとはうすには参加しないことを私に伝えています。

Inconvenient perspectives

去年、熊本の映画館で"The Cove"を見た。I saw "The Cove" in a movie theatre in Kumamoto last year.  正直言うと、見終わったら、嫌な気分になっていました。I had a sick sort of unpleasant feeling after I saw it.  それは、映画を作った人たちが太地町の人たちを「打つ」だけで、立場や意見の違いを乗り越えようというのが皆無だったからだ。I felt that the producers of the movie mounted an attack on the people of Taiji without doing anything to try to bridge the gap between themselves and the people of Taiji.  だから、日本人、特に太地町の人たちがこの映画を嫌う気持ちがよくわかります。So I think I can really understand why to people of Japan, and especially the people of Taiji, hate this movie.

しかし、一方、日本のメディアによる「ザ・コーヴ」報道もかなり偏っていたと思う。At the same time, I think the coverage of this movie in the Japanese press has been very biased.  先週見たように、食肉としてのイルカ肉の安全性に関する合理的な疑問があるにも関わらず、そのことを無視することは日本人の知る権利を軽視することに他ならないと思う。As we saw in class last week, there is reasonable concern about the safety of dolphin meat.  In their avoidance of that issue, the media failed to protect the right of the Japanese people to know about the food they eat.

もう一つの偏り方としては、対立の描き方を上げたいと思います。I'd like to point to the way that conflict was described in the Japanese media as another example of bias.  日本のメディアではRic O'Barryと太地町の対立を「西洋」　vs.  「日本の伝統文化」として描かれてきた。 The Japanese media presented the conflict in the movie as one between "Western culture" and "Japanese traditional culture."  確かに、そういう側面がある。I would agree that part of the conflict is cultural.  しかし、対立は「西洋」vs. 「日本」という枠組みにきれいに治まらない側面がある。However, there are dimensions of the conflict that don't fit easily into the "West" vs. "East" dichotomy.  「活動家」vs. 「水族館産業」という対立もある。The conflict can also be seen as "activist" vs.、"marine park industry." 太地町で行われているイルカ漁は伝統的な側面を持ちながら、国際的にイルカを水族館に供給する極めて近代的な側面もある。The dolphins harvested in Taiji are distributed to marine parks around the world.

日本では「西洋」vs. 「日本の伝統文化」という枠組みでRic O'BarryやThe Coveをとらえて批判することは、批判しやすいという意味で都合が良い。It's convenient in Japan for the media to see the conflict as "West" vs. "Japan" -- it makes it easy to criticize the movie.　逆に、「活動家」vs. 「水族館産業」という観点はRic O'BarryやThe Coveを批判する上では都合の悪い枠組みだ。Conversely, presenting the conflict as "activist" vs. "marine park industry" is inconvenient.  従って、Ric O'Barryの反水族館活動や太地町から世界へのイルカの供給はまったくと言っていいほど日本のメディアによって無視された。  Accordingly, Ric O'Barry's activism to free dolphins in other countries and Taiji's supply of dolphins to the world was ignored.

「都合の悪い」視点を排除するのは日本だけではない。The marginalization of "inconvenient" perspectives is not limited to Japan.  今日の授業で、Al Gore のこの問題に関する話について考えたいと思う。In class study I would like to think about what Al Gore has to say about this issue.
