Aibon's blog

Hi!

For some reason, Aibon's blog has been flagged as possibly being in violation of Blogger rules. Of course, there is nothing wrong with her blog. It is probably the character for "love" in her name that is causing the problem. Please have a look at Aibon's blog.

  • Present a quote from a book or article about a culture that is represented in this class. In other words, the quote should be about one of the following cultures: American, Asian, Australian, British, Canadian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Western (I hope I haven't forgotten anyone). For example, a short statement like "Japanese are ***" would be fine.
  • Include a citation for the quote. For example, if you are quoting from a book you would need to include the author, book title, publisher, year of publication, and the number of the page on which you found the quote.

Party

I enjoyed the party on Saturday. Thirteen people came. A few people did not come who said they would. That wasn't a huge problem but it would have been nice if they had sent an e-mail or something so that we would have had a better idea of how many people to cook for.

Among the many things we enjoyed was this video of Jobotron dancing.

I'd like to thank everyone who came, especially those who helped with the preparation and cleanup.

More topics

Here are some more (but not all) of the topics that have been mentioned on your blogs recently. The poster of the message about the media also wrote that he was very interested in the discussion of sarcasm. I agree.

Assignment

By the end of this week you should have a total of at least two posts on your blogs and have written at least one comment on someone else's blog. Though language may be a problem to some extent, I would like the exchange students to comment on the blogs of the Japanese students and vise versa.

Those of you who have trouble reading Japanese, may find the "Language Tools" on my "Kumamoto Links" page to be useful.

Party and trip dates

We will have a party (probably at my house) on the evening of October 18th. Click here and here for two bilingual maps showing how to get to my house.

The date for the trip is November 15 (and perhaps the 16th if we decide on an overnight).

Keep those dates open!

Following your classmates' blogs

As you can see, on the right-hand side of this page I have added a list of links to the blogs of all of the students in this class who have posted at least one message. If you do not see your blog there (even though you have already posted) please let me know.

I want you to read and comment on each other's blogs. I think you will find it easier to read each other's blogs if you use the "follow" function on Blogger.

To use the "follow" function, you should begin on your "dashboard". I think this is the first page you see after you log in to Blogger. The top of the dashboard looks like this:

Please scroll down to the bottom where you should see "Reading List" and "Blogs I'm following" or something like that. If you click on "ADD" or "MANAGE" below that, you should be able to paste in the addresses of other students in this class. This way you will know when they have posted.

Topics from your blogs

Many participants have created blogs and begun posting. In this post, I'd like to introduce a few topics from these blogs that we might discuss in class.

  • Stereotypes

  • For example, Eriko wrote in her blog that about stereotypes she's seen in Japanese movies. We might spend a little time in small groups listing stereotypes about the nationalities in this class that we've seen in movies, etc.

Tiffany wrote that she's careful to avoid stereotypes. Tiffany

  • Fujisakigu Autumn Festival

  • In her blog, Erynn mentioned the Fujisakigu Autumn Festival. There are many topics that might be discussed in this regard. For example, we might talk about the treatment of horses in the festival.

  • Staring at foreigners

  • This issue was mentioned in the Kumamoto Life blog.

First class

Introduction

In this class, Japanese and non-Japanese students learn from each other through class discussion and small group activities. As culture, particularly Japanese culture, is the primary subject we will study, we will be referring to relevant books and articles as we proceed. However, understanding what famous scholars have said about various aspects of Japanese and non-Japanese cultures is not the ultimate goal in this class. Rather, the primary goal in this class is to find out if the ideas we have found in books and articles or acquired through the media and personal experience really do apply to the people in this class. In this sense, I expect that we will be asking each other the following kinds of questions: “This book says that Japanese people think ***. Is that what you think?” “I grew up thinking that Westerners are very ***. Do you think that people in your country are ***?” “Sometimes Japanese people do ***. That seems rude to me. Is it rude in Japanese culture?”

Discussions that begin with these kinds of questions can become very interesting in a class of this type. However, for interesting discussions to develop we need good questions that the participants in the class find interesting and can answer based on their own experience. To facilitate the production and sharing of these questions, I've decided to ask all of the students in this class maintain a blog specifically for this class.

In our first class, I will help you create a blog on www.blogger.com. Over the course of the semester I will give you various assignments to do on your blogs: writing about experiences, class discussion, information obtained from the library or internet, etc. I will also ask you to read and comment on blogs written by other participants. Ideas and opinions expressed in your blogs will form the basis for class discussion and other class activities.

Notes on creating and maintaining your blogs

* It is not necessary to use your real name on your blog. If you would like to use a nickname or fictitious name to protect your privacy, that's fine. As the course proceeds I will make sure that the participants in the course understand which blog belongs to whom.

* After you make your blog (even before you complete your first post), send the address of your blog to me at masden@kumagaku.ac.jp

* I will give you assignments to do on your blogs but I encourage you to go beyond individual assignments and make additions to your blog whenever you have a comment or question that you think might be relevant to this class.

* You may write in either English or Japanese. You are not required to write in both languages. However, since this is a bilingual class, I encourage you to include comments and questions in both languages to the extent that you are able.
