Lang-8 via mobile phone

If you don't know about it already, I'd like to encourage all of you to look into using Lang-8 to improve your language skills. On Lang-8, you write posts in a language you are learning (e.g. Japanese) and native speakers correct them for you. Lang-8 is a little like Facebook in that you can make "friends." If you make friends with native speakers of the language that your are learning and who are learning your native language, you can help each other by correcting each other's diary entries.

I've asked students who are interested in participating in this class next year to use Lang-8. Click here to see the basic information and the video about Lang-8 that I have provided for them. One student asked about how to do corrections on Facebook using a smartphone. In this post, I'd like to explain how to do that. I'll write all of the explanation in Japanese.

The Cruiser Story

Two large yachts got caught in a storm and landed on a deserted island. A young woman and her fiance were on one yacht and a yachtsman and an old man were on the other yacht. In the evening, about when the storm ended, the young woman's fiance got a high fever and then lost consciousness. The young woman tried to bring the fever down by wiping the sweat from her fiance with moist towel and putting small amounts of water in his mouth but his condition did not improve. She continued to care for him late into the night.

Finally, desperate to save him and unable to operate a yacht by herself, she asked the yachtsman to take her fiance to an island where a doctor could help him. The yachtsman thought "It will take a least five hours to get that island. Sailing at night is dangerous. I'd be risking my life to try to take him." Then, he said "I'll do it if you'll have sex with me first." Shocked by what the yachtsman had said, the young woman went to the old man for advice. He said, "I can't tell you what is good for you or what is bad for you now. You must look inside yourself and come to your own decision." After agonizing about the decision, she decided to do as the yachtsman asked.

At dawn, the yachtsman's yacht arrived at the island and the young woman's fiance was treated by the doctor. After three days, thanks to the dedicated care of the doctor, the fiance woke up. The young woman embraced her fiance then wondered whether or not she should tell him what happened, she explained how she got the yachtsman to cooperate. Upon hearing this, the fiance got very angry and chased her out of the room, saying "How could you do such a thing? Our relationship is over!"

In shock, the young woman sat by the beach and stared out over the waves. The doctor came over and asked her "What's wrong?" After the young woman explained what happened, the doctor said "I really feel your pain. Let me explain things to him. I'm sure he'll understand after his recovered completely. In the meantime, I'll take care of you" and put his hand on her shoulder.

 終。The End.

    • text

This is hard to say . . .

In today's class, I'd like to use role playing to think about how we tell people (or don't tell them) things that they might not want to hear.

Here's one concrete example. Let's say that you are invited to a movie but you're not interested in going to see that movie. What would you say? Let's start by having a few pairs of people demonstrate this and then talking about what we have seen.

Continuing discussions online

Let's continue class discussions online. For example, last week we talked about gay marriage so it would have been nice if some of the people who didn't have an opportunity to speak up in class, or people who had more to say, had posted a thought or two about the topic in our Facebook group. If a few students do this, I hope others will comment on those comments.

Assignment / 課題について

In this post, I would like to explain in writing the assignment that I described in class. In a nutshell, I asked the people who went with us to Minamata to write about our visit to Hot House and the people who couldn't go to find a book about Minamata disease in the library, read part of it, and write about that. Here are some more details.
    Comments about Hot House
    • I will put your comments on our class blog and also send them to Hot House.
    • I'd like the exchange students to write in their native language and in Japanese, if at all possible. I would also appreciate it if the Japanese students could write a little in English, as well as in Japanese.
    • Post your comments in our Facebook group.
Comments about a book on Minamata Disease
    • I don't expect you to read an entire book but I expect you to spend an hour or two reading part of a book about Minamata disease.
    • Post your comments about the book you read in our Facebook group.

Springwater tour

Today in class, we decided that some of you will have an outing together on Wednesday, the 30th of May. The destination and what you do is completely up to you. One suggestion I can make, however, is a cycling tour of springwater spots. Here's a map of the route I think would be good on a hot day.

The one-way distance is about 10 kilometers. Over much of the course, you follow along Ezuko. The final destination is the Kashima Natural Springwater Pool. It's entirely spring fed and the water is very, very, very cold. You may find it to be too cold, but, on a hot day you won't feel hot after you jump in.

Here are some Japanese pages with information about the pool.

Cycling day?

Shall we choose a day to go cycling together?

I recommend the Yuka Family Road.

If the Yuka Family Road is a little too ambitious, I recommend Ezuko.

Inconvenient perspectives

I saw "The Cove" in a movie theatre in Kumamoto last year. I had a sick sort of unpleasant feeling after I saw it. I felt that the producers of the movie mounted an attack on the people of Taiji without doing anything to try to bridge the gap between themselves and the people of Taiji. So I think I can really understand why to people of Japan, and especially the people of Taiji, hate this movie.

At the same time, I think the coverage of this movie in the Japanese press has been very biased. As we saw in class last week, there is reasonable concern about the safety of dolphin meat.  In their avoidance of that issue, the media failed to protect the right of the Japanese people to know about the food they eat.

I'd like to point to the way that conflict was described in the Japanese media as another example of bias. The Japanese media presented the conflict in the movie as one between "Western culture" and "Japanese traditional culture." I would agree that part of the conflict is cultural. However, there are dimensions of the conflict that don't fit easily into the "West" vs. "East" dichotomy. The conflict can also be seen as "activist" vs.、"marine park industry." The dolphins harvested in Taiji are distributed to marine parks around the world.

It's convenient in Japan for the media to see the conflict as "West" vs. "Japan" -- it makes it easy to criticize the movie. Conversely, presenting the conflict as "activist" vs. "marine park industry" is inconvenient. Accordingly, Ric O'Barry's activism to free dolphins in other countries and Taiji's supply of dolphins to the world was ignored.

The marginalization of "inconvenient" perspectives is not limited to Japan. In class study I would like to think about what Al Gore has to say about this issue.

Assignment

Today I am planning to have you talk about the following topics.

  • Should there be regulations to protect shotengai?
  • Minamata disease

Minamata Trip Costs

I'm not exactly sure how much our trip to Minamata will cost per person yet but I have a pretty good idea. Many of the costs will be the same as a similar trip I led students on last year. To see a post about those costs, click here. As I posted earlier, this year we will stay at a ryokan. The ryokan will cost 6,000 yen but two meals are included. Those costs totaled about 4,000 yen last year so this year will cost at least 2,000 yen more.

On Sunday you will need to buy something to eat for lunch and, if you want to go on various rides in Ashikita and/or Otachimisaki you have to pay for that yourself.

Minamata Trip

I just reserved Kikuya Ryokan for our trip on May 19th. It got a really good onsen and we will get to two meals (evening and morning) for ¥6,000, a pretty good price I think. In addition, there are some beautiful waterfalls nearby that I hope we will have time to check out.

Newspaper article

In February, this article about our class appeared in the Kumanichi. Right-click on the image to download it or view it at full size.

_

I like the picture and think that the article is a nice memento.

Unfortunately, though, some of the content is mistaken. For example, the Japanese participants are primarily sophomores but the article says that juniors and seniors participate in the seminar.

Also, there's a quote from me in the article but it's not an exact quote. The reporter has summarized what he thought I was saying in his words, not mine. One difference between what the reporter wrote and what I tried to tell him is that the reporter wrote about "experiencing differences directly," whereas I stressed that an advantage of a class like ours is that students can "notice not only differences but also common points as well."

I'm sure that the reporter did his best to put the article together and get it published on time. There probably wasn't enough time to send me a copy of the text so that I could check it for accuracy before it was published.

Still, I thought I should point out that the "quotation" in the article is slightly different from what I thought I said because I think it's very common (both in Japan and other countries) for quotations in newspapers to be somewhat inaccurate. When you read newspaper articles, it's a good idea to bear in mind that the facts and quotes may not be 100% accurate.

Class pictures

Today was the last session of our Monday class. At the suggestion of one of our members, we took these group shots. My camera is not very good but I think the quality of the smiles is great!

More student comments

Here are a few more comments. The are not all complete.  I left some parts out.
I enjoyed getting to know students from various countries in this class.  Japan and Korea are said to be very similar but I noticed many differences: the obon holiday, shine (jinja) decorations, etc.  I also found myself being attracted to the culture of China and other countries in this class.
I didn't speak very much in this class.  I wish I had had the courage to speak more.  I think sometimes there may be some friction among students because the Japanese students want to speak English and the exchange students want to speak Japanese.  Personally, I would like to speak Chinese with the Chinese students.
  3. During my study in Japan I found interesting things about one class. In this class, we learn how to write a formal letter, mostly for business relation. . . . It would be nice to have such a class in high schools and universities, so that students would have confidence not only in oral presentation, but also in their writings.
I'd like to know more about pachinko.  When did it start?  What do Japanese people think about it?
  5. I know in America, when people are thrust into a new situation, they usually act somewhat shy and self-conscious, and when interacting with strangers, a lot of people try to limit their interaction to the bare minimum. I was wondering what the Japanese experience is in this situation and if it is similar to the American perspective?
I wasn't able to communicate very well in this class.  As I think about the reason, it occurs to me now that I was feeling pretty shy.  In a camp or in a small group situation I can talk with other people but it's hard for me to do so in other situations.  One problem may have been that we didn't see each other outside of class much.  I think it would have been good if the exchange students could have learned Japanese from us as we learned English from them.  Perhaps classroom games or presentations would have been a good way to make friends and learn from each other.
  7. I enjoyed to talk abt how to start hanging out with ppl who you LOVE at Bakery Lol  Japanese is kinda crazy as you know * haha however I think we need to say something for starting their story. In fact, i had started do that w/o say 付き合ってください lol
I was interested in the issue of yakuza and Shimada Shinsuke's retirement. I doubt that the new measures will succeed in making a significant impact on organized crime in Japan.

Student comments

Here are some comments (and one summary about a book related to "kindness") that came to me via blogs, e-mail, and Facebook.
When I spoke with foreign students who were not very good at Japanese yet, I wished I knew more English.
I think became too concerned about language and did not always focus enough on trying to become friends and communicating. I think desire to become friends and showing that you want to communicate is more important than linguistic skill.
It was hard to understand the English spoken by the exchange students in the small groups. I'm not used to the pronunciation of "raw" (real) English and the exchange student speak pretty quickly so it's hard to follow.
I tried to overcome the language barrier by using simpler words, gestures, etc. When that didn't work I used my smartphone and an electronic dictionary. In the beginning it was very hard but it's much easier to communicate now.
Alcohol helps me communicate with the exchange students.
Discussion in this class has impressed the difficulty of communicating across languages. I worry about choosing the expression with the right meaning and about whether or not I will say something rude.
  7. 「happy new year!」 When I said "Happy New Year!" to one of the exchange students, she said "あけまして おめでとうございます." That made me happy.
I sometimes had an opinion but couldn't express it.
The class has led me to feel embarrassed NOT to express my opinion. I think this semester I have been able to let the other students in the class know what kind of person I am.
I was surprised that people would stop a fallen orange with their feet.
  11. 優しさ (kindness): Over a decade ago, a book called The Psychopathology of Kindness (『やさしさの精神病理』)was published in Japan. It said that the new style of "kindness" in Japan was to "give people more space" rather than to try to get closer to them, as had been the case in the past.
We should use Facebook for communication between students.
Not everyone in the class speaks English so I felt rather self-conscious speaking English in class. I think I didn't take full advantage of a good opportunity (もったいなかった) because I was worried about sticking out too much.
I was interested in how the Japanese language seems to have more onomatopoeia than Korean or Engish. Also, the differences in onomatopoeia were interesting.
Study Korean too!!

How much(どのぐらい):
Please write one or two paragraphs. If you would like to write more, you are welcome to do so but it is not necessary. The most important thing is to organize a few thoughts on the topic you choose that can be shared with your classmates.
Where (とこで):
If you have a blog for this class, please use that. If you do not have such a blog or cannot use it, please send me the text of your comments via e-mail or a Facebook message.
