Fatal pyroclastic flow from Mt. Unzen

This video shows the fatal pyroclastic flow from Mt Unzen in 1991.

"On June 3, 1991, the [Fugendake] volcano erupted violently, possibly as a result of depressurisation of the magma column after a landslide in the crater. A pyroclastic flow reached 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) from the crater and claimed the lives of 43 scientists and journalists, including volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft and Harry Glicken." (Source: Wikipedia, "Mount Unzen")

"Mount Unzen was designated a Decade Volcano [one of 16 in the world] in 1991 as part of the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, due to its history of violent activity and location in a densely populated area." Return bus

This message is about our return bus from Nagasaki.

I have made reservations for 26 people (all of us) on the bus that leaves Nagasaki at 2:50 (14:50) and arrives in Kumamoto at the 6:03 (18:03). However, if you and your friends would like to stay a little longer, you can make a reservation for a later bus. You need to tell me, though, that you will be riding on a later bus as soon as possible.  I will need to cancel your reservation and last minute cancelations are a serious problem for the bus company.

Here's the schedule.

This is an e-mail that I sent to the Japanese students.  I'm asking them students to take on a leading role in planning our trip to Nagasaki. We still need to work out a lot of the details, though the most important things (transportation and lodging) are set.

Departure for Nagasaki

We will leave from the Rotary area in front of the university gymnasium at 8:15 on Saturday the 27th. Come about 10 minutes early (8:05 or so) to make sure we can leave at 8:15. It will be an absolute disaster if we miss the ferry that we have to catch an hour later at Kumamoto Port.

The ferry leaves at 9:25 but it will take us a little while to buy tickets and get on board so we need to leave a little early.

When we arrive in Shimabara we will get on a bus the will probably have only one extra seat -- it will be very full. The is no place on this bus for large suitcases. Please limit what you bring as much as possible and place your things in a soft bag that can be stored easily on the shelf above your seat of at your feet.

Getting credit for this class

If you want to get credit for this class, attendance alone is not enough. You need to write comments about the topics that we have discussed in class on a blog or on Lang-8. You must also show that you are reading the comments of other students in this class by occasionally correcting what they have written on Lang-8 or writing comments on what they have written on their blogs.

Brainstorming about debate topics

In today's class I would like to brainstorm about possible topics for a class debate (to be held later in the semester). In choosing a debate topic, I recommend that we consider the following criteria.
  1. Is the topic one with which we all have some personal experience?
  2. Is it a topic that we find interesting?
  3. Can we think of a question (proposition) about the topic that can be answered either "yes" (agree) or "no" (disagree)?
  4. Is opinion about that question (proposition) divided roughly equally in this class?
In order to find a good debate question, I think we should look for topics that satisfy the first two criteria (personal experience and interest). Here are some general topics we might consider.
  • family and/or marriage
  • work 仕事
  • other その他
In small groups, talk about the following.
  1. Which two topics you are most interested in talking about?
  2. What specific issues (questions, propositions) can you think of that relate to the general topic?

Huis Ten Bosch

Some of the students in the class are interested in seeing Huis Ten Bosch. Here's the address of the Huis Ten Bosch site.

The site is also available in English, Korean and Chinese. Just pick the language you want to read from those listed in the upper right-hand corner.

Unfortunately, the location of Huis Ten Bosch is far from Nagasaki City so I think it will be too difficult to visit there on this trip.
