Japanese-style Duckface

A website called "Japan Probe" published a little entry entitled "Japanese-style Duckface." 最近、Japan Probeというサイトに"Japanese-style Duckface"という投稿がありました。We talked about this briefly in class.  授業で少しだけ話しました。I got the impression that, like the video in the Japan Probe entry, the non-Japanese students in the class had a much lower opinion of duckface than most of the Japanese students.  サイト内の動画と同様、授業では日本人学生に比べて、留学生の間ではアヒルぐちの評判があまりよくありませんでした。My own theory is that the "cuteness" and childlike (or childish?) nature of the expression fits very well with the emphasis on cuteness in Japanese culture.  アヒルぐちの「かわいさ」や幼い感じは、かわいさを重視する現代の日本文化によくマッチした表情なので、日本では特に受けがいいのではないかと考えています。

By the way, I learned in class today that duckface got started outside of Japan.  ちなみに、アヒルぐちは先に海外で流行ったことを今日はじめて知りました。However, regardless of where it started, it seems that there are a lot of people in the English-speaking world who dislike it.  しかし、どこで始まったかはともかくとして、今、英語圏ではあまり評判がよくないようです。
