Places we will visit

This map shows the places we will visit on our trip to Nagasaki.  この地図は長崎への旅行で寄るところを示しています。You will need to refer to this map on your smart phones from time to time while we are in Nagasaki when you use the trolley to move in groups around the city.  長崎市内で移動する際に、スマートフォンでこの地図を参考にする必要が生じるでしょう。

Must women be cute?

先週のアンケートでは、 「服、髪型、メークなどに時間やお金などかけなければならないことを負担に感じています」という文に対して、男性よりも女性の方が「そう思う」と答えることが多かったです。In response to last week's survey, more women than men agreed with the following statement: I feel burdened by having to spend time and money on clothes, hair styles, and/or make up.


福岡市が設けた「カワイイ区」について、ホームページに「"福岡は女性がカワイイ"福岡を訪れる人からよく聞く言葉です。」　と書いていました（今年のはじめ）。Earlier this year, Fukuoka City included the following statement on the web page about "Kawaii-ku": "'The women of Fukuoka are kawaii [cute].' This is a comment one often hears from visitors to Fukuoka." 一部の女性から「『女性はかわいくないといけない』という発想を肯定するコメントで、不適切だ」との主旨のクレームがありました。Some women complained that this statement implied that women must be cute and thus put pressure on them to try to but "cute." 皆さんはどう思いますか。What do you all think about this? 男性と比べて、女性の方が要旨を気にさせられますか。 Are women under more pressure than men to look good? Tattoo "survey" in Osaka

In 2011, an Osaka City employee who was working as a cook at a children's welfare facility was accused of intentionally frightening children by showing them his tattoos.  2011年に、大阪市立の児童福祉施設に勤務する男性職員が子供たちに自分の入れ墨を見せて故意に怖がらせたとのクレームが寄せられた。There are differing reports about whether or not the employee actually committed the acts of which he was accused.  職員が実際にそのようなことをしたのかどうかについて、意見がわかれている。(「施設職員が虐待児を恫喝　入れ墨見せ暴言繰り返す　大阪市処分せず」「大阪市入れ墨職員に関する産経新聞の捏造報道は明らかだ」)

The accusations against the employee lead to the implementation of a survey of all 38,000 Osaka City employees.  この事件がきっかけとなり、「全職員約３万８０００人を対象に入れ墨の有無を尋ねる調査を始めた」。The survey was implemented between May 1st and May 10th, 2012.  調査は2012年5月1日から10日まで実施された。In the survey, employees were asked to show the location and size of any tattoos they had on parts of their body outside the shaded areas on the form. 「調査票は２種類あり、１つは衣服を着用しても隠れない場合が多い首から上、肩から手の指先まで、膝から足の指先までの部分について、入れ墨やタトゥーをしているかどうかを問い、している場合は部位や大きさも回答するよう求めたもの。」（「橋下市長『人事配置の参考に』大阪市職員の入れ墨調査」）

Employees were informed that the all employees were required to respond to the survey and that the results would be considered when making job assignments. 市は「全職員に記名での回答を義務付けて」、「結果は今後の人事配置の参考にする」とのことだった。（出典：同上）

In August of 2012, Osaka City announced that they had issued formal reprimands to six employees who had refused to respond to the survey.  2012年の8月に、大阪市が入れ墨に関する調査への回答を拒否した職員を戒告処分にしたことを発表した。（「職員の入れ墨調査について」）

One of the reprimanded employees has sued the city government, claiming that the survey violates his privacy.  戒告処分を受けた職員の一人が、調査がプライバシー侵害であるとして、大阪市に対する訴訟を起こした。（「入れ墨調査問題“再燃”　回答拒否→配転の大阪市職員、取り消し求め提訴」）

In May of 2012, a group of Osaka lawyers issued an appeal to the city to cancel its survey.　2012年の5月に、大阪の弁護士のグループが「入れ墨に関する調査」の中止を求めた。Here are some of the reasons they sited for their opposition to the survey.  掲げた反対の理由をいくつか紹介しよう。

• The decision about whether or not to have a tattoo is a matter of personal expression and the decision about whether or not to disclose a tattoo is a matter of privacy.「人が身体に入れ墨やタトゥーを施すことは、個人の表現の自由であり、幸福追求権、人格権の一発露であり、プライバシーである。」
• Japan's laws governing local officials do not prohibit the wearing of tattoos. 「地方公務員法上、職員が入れ墨等を施すことは何らの義務違反も構成しない。」
• If the visibility of tattoos is the issue of concern there is no need to conduct a survey about tattoos that are not normally visible. 調査票別紙１－１の対象となる部位にある入れ墨等に関しては、外部から認識できるのであるから、全員を対象とする調査の必要はない。

Nagasaki Trip Sign-up Sheet

I am planning to take a group of students to Nagasaki on the 9th and 10th of November. 11月の9日と10日に学生を長崎へ連れていくことを計画しています。November 9th is also the date of the fireworks show in Yatsushiro but, unfortunately, I was not able to arrange an alternate date.  11月9日に、大きな花火大会が八代市で行われますが、残念ながら旅行日程の調整ができませんでした。

It is not necessary to be a member of the seminar to participate.  参加するためにはゼミのメンバーでなければならないということはありません。However, if we have more than 28 students who would like to participate, I will give preference to the members of the seminar and exchange students. しかし、希望者が定員の28名より多くなった場合には、ゼミ生や交換留学生を優先します。

Visit to Kokai

Next week, on the 18th, we will visit Kokai Shotengai.  来週（18日）子飼商店街に行きます。We will divide into small groups today and next week each group will walk to Kokai together.  今日は少人数のグループに分かれますが、来週は同じメンバーのグループで商店街へ歩いてください。Here's a map showing the location. 下記のGoogle Mapに場所は示してあります。

Today, you should get the contact information of all the members of your group.  今日はグループのメンバーの携帯番号など、連絡でぎるよう情報交換してください。If you will not be able to participate next week, be sure to let the other members of your group know about that.  来週、参加できないようなことがあれば、グループのメンバーにそのことをかなず知らせてください。

1. Preparation 準備
   Please look at the web sites of Kokai Shotengai and Fujisaki Hachimangu. 子飼商店街や藤崎八幡宮のそれぞれのウェブサイトを見てください。
2. Departure 出発
   Please gather at a place of your choosing so you can begin walking to Kokai by about 12:20. 12:20ごろまでに出発できるように、自分たちで決めた場所で集まってください。Please don't worry about waiting for members of other groups. 他のグループのことを気にしないで、自分のグループのメンバーがそろったら、出発してください。If someone is more that five minutes late and you cannot get in touch with them, I think you should go ahead an leave. 連絡できないまま5分以上遅れるメンバーがいた場合は、やむを得ず、出発した方がいいと思います。
3. Lunch 昼食
   Kokai is a great place to eat inexpensively, please do eat much before you leave. 子飼は安く食べられるところがいろいろありますので、昼食を食べずに出発してください。
4. Questions you might want to ask 場合によっては、次のようなことを店の人に聞くといいかもしれません。
   
   1. 景気（けいき）はどうですか？(How's business?)
   2. ここは常連（じょうれん）のお客（きゃく）さんが多いですか？(Are a lot of your customers regulars?)
   3. おうちはここですか？(Is this store your home?)
   4. こちらは代々（だいだい）引（ひ）き継（つ）がれているお店（みせ）ですか？Has this shop be passed down through the generations?
   5. 熊大（くまだい）からの留学生（りゅうがくせい）はよく来ますか？(Do foreign students from Kumamoto University come here often?)

   Don't wait for a signal from me. 私からの合図を待たないでください。Begin to leave Kokai early enough to be able to get to your next class easily. 次の授業に間に合うように子飼商店街を出てください。

   The following week, I will ask the members of each group to say a few words about their experience. その次の週、それぞれのグルーブのメンバーに経験したことについて少し話してもらうます。
