Nagasaki and Western Culture

When Japan was isolated from the rest of the world under sakoku, Dejima was Japan's only point of contact with the West.

We may not have enough time to visit Dejima, but I want you to know about the importance of this place.

We will go to Glover Garden so please read about the garden and Thomas Glover. First, click here to see the official site in either Japanese, English, Korean or Chinese.

Unzen Jigoku

Here's a map of the Unzen Jigoku area we will visit.

We spend about an hour in this area. There are two main activities for you to choose from.
  1. Walking in the jigoku (hell)
There are many paths to walk on in the jigoku area.
  2. Onsen 温泉
If you choose to bathe in an onsen, you can take a quick look at the jigoku area, but you will not be able to take a leisurely walk there. If you are going to bathe, I recommend that you choose one of the following two hotels. Both web sites have links to Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese explanations.

Fatal pyroclastic flow from Mt. Unzen

This video shows the fatal pyroclastic flow from Mt Unzen in 1991.

"On June 3, 1991, the [Fugendake] volcano erupted violently, possibly as a result of depressurisation of the magma column after a landslide in the crater. A pyroclastic flow reached 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) from the crater and claimed the lives of 43 scientists and journalists, including volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft and Harry Glicken." (Source: Wikipedia, "Mount Unzen")

"Mount Unzen was designated a Decade Volcano [one of 16 in the world] in 1991 as part of the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, due to its history of violent activity and location in a densely populated area." (Source: Wikipedia, "Mount Unzen")

Return bus

This message is about our return bus from Nagasaki.

I have made reservations for 26 people (all of us) on the bus that leaves Nagasaki at 2:50 (14:50) and arrives in Kumamoto at the 6:03 (18:03). However, if you and your friends would like to stay a little longer, you can make a reservation for a later bus. You need to tell me, though, that you will be riding on a later bus as soon as possible.  I will need to cancel your reservation and last minute cancelations are a serious problem for the bus company.

Here's the schedule.

Click here to see the web page I referred to in making the reservations.

This is an e-mail that I sent to the Japanese students.  I'm asking them students to take on a leading role in planning our trip to Nagasaki. We still need to work out a lot of the details, though the most important things (transportation and lodging) are set.
