Brainstorming about debate topics

In today's class I would like to brainstorm about possible topics for a class debate (to be held later in the semester). 今日の授業で、後日この授業でできるディベートのテーマについてアイディアを出し合いたいと思います。In choosing a debate topic, I recommend that we consider the following criteria. テーマを選ぶにあたって、次の基準を考えると良いでしょう。

1. Is the topic one with which we all have some personal experience? 全員にとって身近なテーマ（つまり、今まで実際に経験したようなこと）なのか？
2. Is it a topic that we find interesting? 興味のあるテーマなのか？
3. Can we think of a question (proposition) about the topic that can be answered either "yes" (agree) or "no" (disagree)? "yes"（賛成）または"no"（反対）と答えられる質問（命題）をそのテーマについて作ることができるか？
4. Is opinion about that question (proposition) divided roughly equally in this class? ゼミの参加者の中では、その質問（命題）に関する意見はだいたい半々に分かれているか？

In order to find a good debate question, I think we should look for topics that satisfy the first two criteria (personal experience and interest). いいテーマを見つけるためには最初の二つの基準（身近で興味が持てる話題）を満たす話題を探すべきだろうと思います。Here are some general topics we might consider. 次のようなテーマはどうでしょうか？

• communication コミュニケーション
• family and/or marriage　家族・結婚
• gender and sexuality ジェンダーや性的関係
• education　教育
• work　仕事
• leisure or lifestyle　レジャーや生活
• other その他

In small groups, talk about the following. 少人数のグループで、次のことについて話し合ってください。

1. Which two topics you are most interested in talking about?　最も話し合いたいテーマはどれか（二つを選んでください）？
2. What specific issues (questions, propositions) can you think of that relate to the general topic?　興味のあるテーマについて、どのような具体的な問題（質問、命題）が考えられるか？
